Richard Beck (1827-1866) and Joseph Beck formed the optical manufacturing firm of R and J Beck in 1843, based at 69 Mortimer Street, London. James Smith worked with the company under the name of Smith and Beck, renamed Smith, Beck and Beck in 1854 but reverting to R and J Beck when Smith retired in 1865. Therefore this particular viewer dates between 1854 and 1865.
The viewer is constructed from French polished teak with its matching lockable tabletop stand.
The viewer also fits inside to its own teak box with recessed brass carry handle that neatly slides inside the main lockable tabletop box.
The viewer has an adjustable incline, rack and pinion focus that all move freely.

Condition - Very good, with original key. This viewer and stand has meticulously been well taken care and is a fine example.

Excellent - No damage. Possibly some very light fading or light crazing.
Very good - No damage. Some fading, heavy crazing, foxing, etc.
Good - There may be some damage. However this will be either very small, difficult to see, hidden from sight or repaired.
Poor - Damaged. There will be something wrong with the item which may significantly effect the item use.
Very poor - Item is more or less unusable. Scrap.
