Circa 1880

French

A fantastic example of a small ladies tabletop jewellery casket in classic Rococo style with Lion paw feet.

Rocaille is originally a 18th-century style ornamentation featuring shell-like, rock-like, and scroll motifs. Rocaille is one of the important aspects of the more widely known Rococo style of architecture and decoration. Rocaille ornamentation is often seen on Rococo furniture that looks like a shell or the irregular shapes of small pebbles. It frequently appears in the centre of Rococo's characteristic scrolls. Rocaille is most often found in small pieces of furniture, frames and smaller items like candlesticks and the framework to this jewellery box.

The Rococo Revival style emerged in Second Empire France and then was adapted in England. Revival of the rococo style was seen all throughout Europe during the 19th century within a variety of artistic modes and expression including decorative objects of interior design. In much of Europe and particularly in France, the original rococo was regarded as a national style, and to many, its reemergence recalled national tradition.

The original bevelled glass all round with a hand painted Art Nouveau floral design to the top.
